The 1990s was an era of perfected inventions and new inventions. Inventions such as photoshop, digital camera, and a new shuttle, has improved the society. Photoshop gave the advantage to edit photographs with numerous of techniques and it was a big benefit for businesses. Digital cameras were improved and taking pictures became easier and more enjoyable. The Space Shuttle Atlantis was an important shuttle in this era that helped to complete many important missions to space. These inventions made an impact on the society and economy.

Adobe Photoshop is a graphic editor or image editing software that turns simple pictures into extraordinary pictures. It was started by Thomas Knoll but his brother John Knoll collabrated with him to perfect this little project which came to known as the top selling program. It all started off in 1987 when Thomas Knoll, a doctoral candidate in computer vision, was trying to find a way to display grayscale images on a black-white bitmap monitor. By doing this, he resulted with a code called "Display" which grabbed the attention of his brother John Knoll. John was an Industrial Light and Magic employee who motivated Thomas to turn it into an image editing program. Together for a few months, they worked on the program which came to be known as ImagePro. However, later in the year, Thomas renamed the program to Photoshop. Then he made a deal with scanner manufacturer Barneyscan to sell copies of it. While on the other hand, John went to Silicon Valley to demonstrate photoshop to the engineers at Apple Computer Inc and the art director of Adobe, Russell Brown. Fortunately, both of their presentations to different companies were successful and "Adobe decided to purchase the license to distribute in September 1988." Both brothers continued to work on Photoshop and to improve it. Thomas remained writing program codes and in 1990 Photoshop 1.0 was released. New versions released in the following years with added features.

Digital cameras were first invented in the 1980's but in the following years of the 1990s, came with the arrival of true digital cameras. In 1990, the Dycam Model 1 was the first consumer digital camera that was sold. It used a CCD (charge-coupled devices) image sensor, a device that converts an optical image to an electric signal. It was the first digital camera that could attach to a PC and produce black and white photos at 320 by 240 resolution. In 1991, Kodak DCS-100 came out and it used a 1.3 megapixel sensor. In 1988, JPEG and MPEG was formed to allow image and video files to be compressed for storage. But in 1995, Ricoh RDC-1 was the first camera to have the ability to record video clips. Also the Casio QV-10 was the first camera with a crystal display on the back. The first camera to use CompactFlash, a mass storage device format used in portable electronic devices, was the Kodak DC-25 in 1996. The digital camera was greatly improved in the 1990s with more techinques and ablitlies.

 

 

The Space Shuttle Atlantis was one of the best operational spacecraft in the Space Shuttle fleet of NASA and through out the decade it has made many successful launches. Space Shuttle Atlantis made its first flight in 1985. In 1991, it deployed the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory which was the second of the NASA great observations to be launched to space. "In 1995, Atlantis made seven straight flights to the Russian space station Mir" These flights helped deliver docking module and conducted astronaut exchanges. From 1997 to 1999, Atlantis has made 6 flights to assembly activities at the International Space Station. All in total, Space Shuttle Atlantis has made 28 flights and each mission was a success.

These invention had an impact on the lives of the people. In the following years of the 1990s and into the new millennium, new versions of photoshop were released and it was renamed to Adobe Photoshop CS (creative suit). Many advertising businesses used photoshop to make the perfect advertisement and many ordinary people used it personally or for projects. Magazine covers, photographs of models, and every poster displayed to the public is photoshopped. It is a common thing to photoshop a picture to make it look even better. Digital cameras in this era were perfected to be even better. They were made to store a lot more pictures, and new features were added such as being able to record a video and to connect your camera to a computer or tv. The Space Shuttle Atlantis was an important shuttle in the 1990s. "Atlantis has completed 28 flights, spent 220.40-days in space, completed 3,468 orbits, and flown 89,908,732 nautical miles (166,510,972 km) in total, as of September 2006. Among the five Space Shuttles flown in space, Atlantis has conducted a subsequent mission in the shortest time after the previous mission when it launched in November, 1985, only 50 days after its previous mission." The new and perfected inventions in the 1990s changed the lives for many people and their lifestyle.
