Psychodelic Science The 60s were all about experimentation, experimentation, experimentation. People experimented all kinds of ways both physically and mentally. Many technological advancements were made during this decade because of all the frequent experimentation that ultimately lead up to great findings in the world of science during the psychedelic 60's. The most recognized event of the psychedelic sixties can be summed up in one quote, "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind". On July 16, 1969 Apollo 11 became the first manned mission to land on the moon. 4 days later Apollo 11 became the first successful landing on the moon in history. Three incredible men Commander Neil Alden Armstrong, Command Module Pilot Michael Collins, and Lunar Module Pilot Edwin Eugene "Buzz" Aldrin Jr. manned the rocket. Landing on the moon not only made 700 million Americans proud of their country's achievements but it also identified America as the dominant innovator of technology in the world. The two astronauts that set foot on the new celestial body, Nail A. Armstrong and "Buzz" Aldrin, brought back with them 46 pounds of lunar rocks and samples for our brilliant scientists back in Earth to observe and experiment with. The expedition only lasted 21 hours and 36 minutes but it is eternal in the hearts of Americans everywhere. A historical invention during the psychedelic 60's was "Spacewar", the first digital computer video game. Spacewar first brought happiness to children and adults everywhere in 1962 at the Massachusets Institute of Technology. The creators of Spacewar Steve Slug Russell, Martin Shag Graetz and Wayne Witanen all spent approximately 200 hours of long hard work to create this addicting video game. Spacewar not only set the path for other entertaining games but also inspired many we know and love today such as Senko No Ronde, Street Fighter, and Escape Velocity. Scientists and inventors experimented enormously during the 60's decade and successfully accomplished phenomenal achievements such as those of landing on the moon and creating a nationwide game that entertained generations. Without these accomplishments America would not be what it is today for the dedication to exploring new heights of unknown territory and the game represents happiness and entertainment this country and its people give us.
