1840's inventions

There were many new inventions in the 1840's. Some of the inventions were the typewriter, fax machine, safety pin, and the grain elevator. The inventions that I'm going to talk about are ice cream, the sewing machine, and the rotary printing press. These American inventions are really important and are still around today.

Ice cream or (iced cream) is the favorite dessert for many Americans especially children. Ice cream is a frozen dessert made from dairy products, such as milk and cream, combined with flavorings and sweeteners, such as sugar. There are many types of flavors for ice cream like vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, etc. Ice cream used to be made by hand in a large bowl placed inside a tub filled with ice and salt. This was called the pot-freezer method. Later Nancy Johnson invented the first hand-cranked churn on September 9, 1843. The hand-cranked churn produced smoother ice cream than the pot freezer and did it quicker. Today there are thousands of ice cream stores just in the U.S. This invention is definitely the children's favorite and my favorite.

The first sewing machine was invented by Elias Howe in 1846 but back than they called it the lock stitch machine. His machine used an eye-pointed needle (with the eye and the point on the same end) carrying the upper thread, and a shuttle carrying the lower thread. The curved needle moved through the loop, interlocking the thread. The feed let the machine down-requiring the machine to be stopped frequently to set up again. Sewing machine is used to make clothes, pillows, and anything that needs to be stitched. Today many people use sewing machines to make clothes and other type of accessories. Women like our mothers and grandmothers use sewing machines the most.

The first rotary printing press was invented by Richard M. Hoe in 1846 and then improved by William Bullock. A rotary printing press is a printing press in which the images to be printed are curved around a cylinder. Printing can be done on large number of substrates paper, cardboard, plastic. Substrates can be sheet feed or unwound on a continuous roll through the press to be printed and further modified if required. Printing presses that use continuous rolls are sometimes referred to as "web presses". The printing press was a great invention that we still use today although we did improve it.

The 1840's brought us many new inventions. To me and pretty much every child in the world, Ice cream is the greatest invention during this time. Ice cream is an amazing dessert I can't live without it. The sewing machine is also important because without it I wouldn't be wearing the nice clothes I have on. This decade was great for inventors.
