The events that started in the 60's like the Vietnam war and social changes seem that they were going to continue in the 70's. The 70's had a lot of major trends and events like disillusionment in the government, advance in civil rights, social movements, and an increase in space exploration. The 1970's also had some inspiring people. The 70's also had a lot of fads and fashion changes. A lot of events in the 70's were the inspiration of the music, entertainment, and fashion of the decade. The Vietnam War continued to divide the country in half even after the "Paris Peace Accord" in January 1973 put an end to the U.S. military participation in the war. Women, minorities, and gays increasingly demanded full legal equality and privileges in society. Minorities and women asserted their rights in jobs and quality education. Native Americans also demanded attention to their plight and in 1975 the "Indian Self Determination Act" encouraged them to take control of heir own education. In April 22, 1970 the "First Earth Day" was celebrated. In May 29, 1972 the U.S. and the Soviets signed the "Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty." In 1978 residents of Love Canal, NY, had to evacuate due to dangerous toxic chemicals buried in the area. |
Some Inspiring people of the 1970's must have been Cesar Chavez, Shirley Chisholm, and Jesse Jackson. Cesar Chavez organized farm workers and they demanded higher wages, health insurance, and other benefits for migrant workers in Some fads and fashions in the 1970's included mood rings, smiley face stickers, and pet rocks. A fad that happened in the 1970's is that families vacationed in station wagons and everyone wanted an RV. The wildest fad in the 1970's was streaking nude through very public places. The fashion of the time was men had shoulder length hair, non-traditional clothing, platform shoes, earth shoes, colorful patches, and hot pants. Women's Fashion was anything they wanted to wear from ankle length dresses to hot pants and miniskirts. |
